My teaching style is based on the Communicative Approach (1980). As I continue to teach Spanish for high school students, conversational and business Spanish, and Italian and German to adults, I utilize fundamental resources based on individual strengths or groups’ needs and professions. In my teaching methodology, not only do I make use of materials such as books and articles, but I also authenticate the various curriculums by creating my own conversational dialogs and individualized learning content. Also, I incorporate games that can be applicable for pair or group teaching and create dialogues to promote language retention, which are applicable to the Communicative and Direct Approach (1900).
My intention is to motivate students while providing the opportunity to practice and improve their language skills via simulations and/or situational concepts that can be applicable to real life situations.
As a mentor and teacher, I value the Affective Humanistic Approach (1970) “that rather than viewing language through a cognitive space, focus on the value of human beings in society and culture.” By allowing students to choose their preferred method of learning, I am fostering the students desire to become life-long learners in providing them with that autonomy.
As an educator and a mentor, I strive to identify tasks that will have the biggest impact on my students' learning, in assisting them to reach their goal. I do so by personalizing my tutoring and taking time to understand each individual student by separating my lessons into what needs to be done, what is truly valuable and impactful, honoring the 80/20 rule. This rule states that there is an inverse relationship to input and output. I realize that I have to cater to their needs, in order for them to be successful.
I like to incorporate scaffolding techniques by breaking down large tasks into smaller ones, as it will benefit particularly the students that are struggling in the targeted language. Sometimes in life we need to slow down, so we can step up later. I want my students to be equipped and motivated to practice the new language while emerging in the new world of discovering cultural connectedness.
